Title: Isotopic monitoring to improve management of nitrate pollution in water
Current management and control of water quality with respect to nitrate is based on monitoring concentration, which alone does not permit unambiguously establishing the type, location and contribution of its various sources. Thus design and application of specifically targeted management plans for nitrate control is improbable. The great added value of isotopes is the precise identification of nitrate sources, tracing them, and quantifying their respective sources. Isonitrate will demonstrate to policy makers the technical and economic feasibility of integrating isotopes for characterizing water bodies and analyzing the pressure and impact of nitrate pollution for more effective implementation of environmental management measures for rivers.
