Title: Pretreatment of wastewater sludge using enzymic hydrolysis at Blackburn (UK)
The Blackburn Enzymic Hydrolysis process was developed to demonstrate a number of key novel features: • that high-quality cake could be consistently produced that meets the Safe Sludge Matrix requirements for application to agriculture; • that the process could work two to three times faster than conventional digestion; • that additional biogas could be produced; • that the process could be readily retrofitted to existing wastewater plants; • that the process was acceptable to farmers and regulators. Based on technology patented by United Utilities and based on a fundamental review of digestion science, the Blackburn plant was developed with the assistance of the EU Life financial instrument.
