Title: Solar economy in Sicily
In 2005 the county of Palermo set very ambitious targets for growth in renewables and energy efficiency by 2013. The government of the province of Sicily is strongly committed to the implementation of such a challenging renewable energy plan. Progress is reflected in energy production from wind (4 MW), biomass (10 MW), solar photovoltaic (2 MW), solar thermal collectors (3000 m2), energy certification of buildings, mini-hydro plants (0.2 MW) and bio-ethanol (1 million hectoliters/year). The innovative and comprehensive experience in local sustainable development with relevant economic and social aspects deserves to be known and replicated elsewhere.
