Title: Stove project in Guatemala
More than 3 billion people in developing countries burn traditional biomass fuels indoors. Sources of such fuel are shrinking, causing increased labor for collecting it; acute respiratory infection causes 1.6 million premature deaths a year due to such indoor burning. To ameliorate these problems, HELPS International developed the ONIL stove, which reduces fuel demand by 70% while meeting local cooking needs, minimizing the risk of burns, and removing smoke and gases from inside the house. Computer technology was applied to the design to optimize combustion efficiency and heat transfer to the cooking pots. The stoves are manufactured in Guatemala.
