Title: Diverse solar applications in Pakistani village improve living conditions
In the solar village Bharmal in Sindh, Pakistan, solar cells replace kerosene lights, solar cooking displaces cooking by burning mule/camel dung (which emits dangerous fumes), and an efficient solar desalinator supplants brackish non-potable water by providing fresh drinking water. The project especially addresses gender and child abuse issues because women and children fetch water from wells and collect animal waste and tree branches for cooking. The solar village project empowers the residents and reduces their dependence on conventional energy sources while assuring sustainability over 20 years.
