Title: Wells serve hygiene and sanitation for rural Ethiopia
Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries of the world. One of its major problems is inadequate access to drinking water. Compounded by frequent dry spells, this causes famine that cyclically causes some 100,000 deaths. The use of non-potable water fosters diseases that particularly affect children. VIS has contributed to the improvement of the hygienic and sanitary conditions of the Ethiopian population by providing access to drinking water in more remote areas of the country. The project has constructed 10 wells with hand pumps to server over 13,000 people. Organizational aspects and training guarantee the long-range sustainability of the wells.
