Title: Public bicycles in Spain serve as models for sustainable urban transportation
BiCiBur is a free bicycle loan system developed by Burgos City Council (Spain) that has made 200 bicycles available for public use in the city of 180,000 inhabitants. In August 2006 loan facilities with 15 bicycles each were installed at four locations around the city. The smart-card software and equipment were developed exclusively by city technicians. After less than a year of operation, the system has registered over 2000 members and has conducted over 5000 bicycle loans. Thus far in 2007 four more bicycle loan points have been installed. The project’s broad joint financing base includes the EC. A social organization handles bicycle maintenance. The project, which has been replicated in other cities, strives for sustainable alternative transportation options.
