Title: Next Generation Wind Technology by Hywind
The Norwegian company StatoilHydro has conceived the world’s first floating wind energy plant and will test it over the next two years. The floatation body consists of a ballast-filled steel shell that will extend 100 meters under the water surface and be attached to the ocean floor with three pylons. This new technology provides the wind industry the possibility to capture the wind in deep water. The goals of the project are a sustainable and efficient energy supply for the future, opening of a new market for the production of renewable, and the reduction of CO2 emissions by avoiding fossil fuels. Since June 2009 the pilot plant has been installed at a depth of 200 meters. Full operation will begin in the autumn of 2009.
