Title: WASTE MANAGEMENT AND RECYCLING PROTECT ON SANTA ORUZ ISLAND; GALAPAGOS
One of the most critical environmental threats to the Galapagos is the increased generation of waste and the improper waste management practices. WWF and the Municipality of Santa Cruz have implemented an integrated waste management and recycling system. The project’s main objective is to guarantee that no waste is released to the fragile environment and to minimize the amount of waste that has to be deposited in the local landfill. From 2006 to 2009 the average recycling rate (recyclables and organics) increased from 10% to 50% in volume. This makes the Santa Cruz Recycling Project the most efficient waste management system in Ecuador.
