Title: Generation of wealth from waste
Through the work of Shivsadan Renewable Energy Research Institute, the Indian city of Sangli has taken a profound step toward environmental consciousness and renewable energy. A pilot plant is producing biogas from human excrement and food waste to reduce environmental pollution and eliminate health risks for the population. The biogas liquid manure passes through an ecological cleansing system that uses water hyacinths, which filter a large part of the pollutants. Resources such as cleansed water and biomass are recovered from the harvested plants, which is important for the urban environment. Power generation from biomass can meet the electricity requirements of a whole village. A solar cooker will aid the rural population additionally. In the future, a team of experts will conduct consciousness building to transfer the technology and the knowledge to the population.
