Title: Maximus Peace Paper

Not so long ago elephants were hunted and killed for their ivory, their meat and their hide. Nowadays these animals are endangered in Sri Lanka because they require much space and nourishment and so come in conflict with farmers. The paper factory Maximus developed a new system to make paper from elephant dung (pachyderm paper), thus converting this elephant by-product into capital. This is to be the first step toward changing the attitude of farmers toward the elephants and thus to protect the pachyderms. Since 1997 the company has been selling its products and part of the profit goes to the nearby elephant orphanage. Likewise farmers who suffer damage from elephants are compensated.
