Title: Horse manure drying system

RTS Trocknungstechnik GmbH in Carynthia, Austria, developed a drying system that enables the use of horse manure and wood shavings bedding as biomass fuel in for wood chip heating systems up to 1 MW. A conveyor system transports the moist mixture of wood shavings and manure to the system’s drying chamber, where dry air from underneath dries the matter. Then the complete mass is mechanically removed via a scraper and transported to a storage room under the plant, where it is ready for use, e.g., as fuel in a wood chip heating system or as briquettes. The process is automatic, so that the horse owner can concentrate on his business. A prototype has been in operation since 2006. The annual energy balance for the dried manure for ten horses corresponds to the heating capacity of 30,000 liters of oil. The return on investment applies from 25 horses.
