Title: Drinking water in a national park

At an elevation of 1105 meters on a mountain pasture in Austria’s Kalkalpen National Park, a cabin (built 1843) provides food and drink for hikers and mountain bikers from early May until late October (depending on snow conditions). However, the drinking water at the cabin did not meet EU guidelines and service was discontinued. In order to put the cabin back into operation, Aschauer & Koppenberger installed a filter system with preliminary, fine and nano-filtration, operated with renewable energy from a photovoltaic system, along with a subsequent UV disinfection system. Implemented in June 2009, these measures brought the water quality to the legal requirements.
