Title: Full solar in a twin package
The town of Wolfurt in Vorarlberg, Austria, utilized the opportunity presented by the new construction of the firehouse and the necessary renovation of the elementary school to implement a showcase project in energy and ecology. The firehouse, built to the passive house standard, and the renovated school implemented intensive thermal solar utilization, water-coupled heat pumps, a 225 m² photovoltaic system, and contracting for eco-power to enable fully solar energy supply for the buildings. Replacing the natural gas heating system saves 54 tons of CO2 annually. The overall energy requirement of the two buildings was reduced by 94%. Construction work will be completed in 2010.
