Title: World’s first production of methane from wood
Since 2004, researchers at the Paul Scherrer Institute, the biomass power plant in Güssing, the Technical University of Vienna, CTU AG and Repotec have been working on a process for converting wood into synthetic natural gas. Such gas can then be fed into public gas lines, which enables generating energy from wood for the generation of electricity in gas-fired power plants or for powering automobiles. This also represents a very environmentally friendly energy source, as the gasification of wood is CO2-neutral. The process has been tested on a technical scale in a test facility. 2008 saw the first demonstration unit producing methane, the majority component of natural gas.
