Title: Renovation of an apartment building to the passive house standard
The Austrian city of Dornbirn has a showcase example of renovation of an old apartment building. The apartment complex, built in 1980 by a nonprofit housing association, was renovated thermally with the ambitious goal of reducing its energy consumption from 250 to 25 kWh/m²a. Insulation of outside walls and the ceilings of each level and the basement, replacement of windows and balcony doors, automated ventilation, a solar system for hot water, and a gas caloric burner enabled dropping energy consumption to 15 kWh/m²a. Renovation was completed in 2008. Rents were increased only slightly.
