Title: Vienna’s organic recycling makes important contribution to climate protection
A large part of waste material from settlements is biogenic in nature. The diversity of its composition and varying fluid and energy contents, etc. demand different forms of treatment. Thus garden waste is processed to high-quality compost and kitchen oils are turned into biodiesel to drive the compost system. A biogas plant in Vienna mechanically processes kitchen wastes and converts them to biogas (1,225,000 m³ annually). The hot water resulting from burning biogas transports heat for the biogas plant and feeds into the public district heating system to supply 600 Vienna households.
