Title: Improving the lives of informal Gold miners in the Zaamar goldfields, Mongolia
Mongolia has over 100,000 informal “Ninja” miners working in gold fields and coal mines. They work with little regard for themselves or the environment, often using cyanide or mercury in unsafe ways. This project is assisting Ninja miners by providing training and medical care, including creating a local Information Centre and providing support in the proper use of chemicals and reducing environmental impacts. We are training selected Ninja miners to form an NGO of Ninjas and empowering them to negotiate guidelines for Ninja mining, with the aim of legalizing their activities, improving practices and providing them with government protection.
