Title: River, Fiber and Power: Bringing Lights and Life to Poor Coconut Farmers in Remote Areas
In the Philippines, coconut farmers in remote areas are poor and not reached by electricity. This project uses the river currents to generate clean electricity that energizes a battery recharging facility. Batteries and light bulbs are distributed to provide lights to households scattered in remote mountains. The project is financially sustained by training the farmers to process their widely available coconut husks into fiber and barter the fiber to pay for the battery recharging services. The additional fibers they produced are paid in cash, providing the people alternative livelihood. The fibers are environment friendly and used in environmental conservation activities.
