Title: Scharnhauser Park as an example of sustainable city planning
On 150 hectares in Ostfildern (on the perimeter of Stuttgart, Germany) a new city district is evolving for completion by 2010/12. Scharnhauser Park will house 8000 residents and provide 2000 jobs. The settlement will be integrated into existing decentralized structures and will be an autonomous part of the city of Stuttgart. One of the most important prerequisites of this project was the new metropolitan rail line, which since September 2000 leads from Stuttgart via Scharnhauser Park to the district of Nellingen. Scharnhauser Park will attain an impressive density above the average for the region of Stuttgart. The mixture of living and working enables short distances to work as well as the installation of short-distance district heating. In addition, the nearest city bus station is not more than 500 meters from any apartment or workplace in Scharnhauser Park.
