Title: Conversion of paper mill sludge into absorbent for water surface cleaning - caps technology
The modern sustainable management of production processes should be based on the industrial ecology approach, of which an essential element is the eco‐symbiosis theory. The mentioned theory envisages a close interconnection of production technologies and/or even different industrial sectors with the aim of reducing emissions, optimizing energy consumption and the reducing of producing costs. Technology for the conversion of paper mill sludge (PMS) into absorbent for water surface cleaning named CAPS fulfils all of above mentioned requirements and even more. The CAPS technology with this regard uses the surpluses of the thermal energy which paper mills usually wastes into the environment, for processing their industrial waste (PMS) into high added value product. The produced absorbent (HAWSC) may be then used by the oil, chemical, logistic and transport industries as well as public bodies like fire brigades, civil protection and disaster relief institutions, therefore by institutions which needs an environmental friendly, efficient and cheap product for cleaning oil spills from water surfaces and/or for oil separators maintenance. The LCA analysis has showed that the extension of the paper production line with the CAPS technology substantially prolongs and efficiently closes the life cycle circle of paper. With an investment of about 3,8 Mio € into CAPS production line with a production capacity of about 10.000 tons of absorbent per year, the paper mills can decrease their GHG‐s emissions of around 0,58 tone per 1 tone of the produced paper and earn approx. 90 € for each tone of sparing CO2 based on the presumption that they are selling produced HAWSC for 15 % cheaper than the existing prices for natural and artificial absorbents present on the market nowadays. Interested customers will be then able to buy cheap and environmental friendly absorbent for oil spill cleaning and oil separators maintenance. It is predicted that the selling of 10.000 tons of absorbent per year will uptake approx. 2 % of global absorbent market capacities.
