Title: Ravensbourne River Corridor Improvements
Lewisham Council and its partners have transformed the Ravensbourne river corridor in south East London by adapting the approach of ‘designing out crime’ from housing developments and applying it in an environmental setting to create safe natural spaces. Authorities have historically been reluctant to invest in rivers, perceiving that any improvements would soon be undone through vandalism and crime. But in the case of the rejuvenated Ravensbourne, increased usage and local ownership has actually reduced crime and the fear of crime along this newly- accessible river corridor which also provides a quality environment and promotes biodiversity.
