Title: Sustainable Environmental Practices and Policies (SEPP) Program
The YMCA of Lebanon implemented the Sustainable Environmental Practices and Policies (SEPP) Program between 2003 and 2009, establishing nine (9) wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) and new sewage networks in key villages with contaminated or at-risk water resources. Major successes included the long-term participation of local municipalities, which raised 50% of the WWTP costs, and the adaptation of low-maintenance natural technologies that improved overall sustainability. Simultaneously, the YMCA directed a 3-year environmental awareness campaign targeting local women, youth, and small NGOs, reaching over 10,000 participants. A final program component presented “Lessons Learned” to government ministries through field visits and meetings.
