Title: Blueprint for a Rural Sustainability Commons in South Africa
This project has seen a remarkable groundswell of growth, carrying with it new funders, other NGO’s, a variety of government departments, and most important, the desires of the local community for self determination. Some 4 years ago, the first Sustainability Commons in the district was developed, a local rural school, which, under guidance of government and non-government support, began to develop appropriate (and demonstrable) renewable energy technologies. These technologies have been replicated in the local community, learning and resources have been made available, and the commons concept has succeeded in making the leap to the community. More schools and more communities in the Chris Hani District Municipality became interested. National and local government saw the need to support the initiative and the project has grown substantially, now incorporating 4 Sustainability Commons which demonstrate and promote renewable energy technologies and learning which is appropriate to the African context.
