Title: Half-timbered house requiring renovation is converted to low-energy house

Familie Bucher A do-it-yourself renovation converted the Bucher family’s 300 year old half-timbered home to a low-energy house. Timbers, roof, windows, floors and heating were replaced and solar collectors were added. The CO2 footprint of the house was reduced by over 90%. Natural, ecological building materials were used, including clay and flax. The timbers were exposed and outside walls were insulated on the inside. Despite new energy-saving technology, the old charm of the house was preserved. With the know-how gained from the renovation, the home owner completed training as an energy consultant; his website www.fachwerkhaus-lorsch.de provides interesting knowledge.
