Title: Reviving biogas as a useful and viable technology in Sri Lanka
Practical Action played the pivotal role in rejuvenating biogas technology and usage in Sri Lanka at a time when biogas was a ‘dying’ technology, discarded by users and ignored by policy-makers. In mid 1990s, the project team began R&D, rehabilitating, training, and awareness-raising of suitable biogas technologies, with the aim of providing basic, affordable household energy for off-grid areas. Their approach was holistic, looking at energy access, improved agriculture, environmental management and livelihoods. 15 years on, they are proud of having revived biogas as a useful and viable technology and put in place necessary support mechanisms to advice and implement biogas nationally.
