Title: Buffelsdraai Landfill Reforestation
In order to reduce the carbon foot print of holding the world cup 2010 in Durban it was decided to reintroduce endemic indigenous forests into the buffer area around the Buffelsdraai Landfill. Local community are enlisted to grow seedlings into saplings. When these are large enough they are delivered to the landfill and the person is given vouchers which can be immediately returned for food or can be collected until sufficient number for a bicycle or similar. The local community are then employed to dig the holes and plant and maintaine the saplings until they are strong enough to survive on their own. To date 82 000 trees have been planted.
