Title: ‘Smarter Driving’ scheme
In April 2009 over 300 staff attended training in efficient driving techniques. In order to keep awareness high after the training, the Council’s Motor Transport Team has been running a ‘Driver of the month’ competition to recognise the most efficient drivers.
The scheme has been supported from the very top of the organisation, including the Chief Executive and Councillor John Tanner, Board Member for a Cleaner, Greener Oxford, who commented “some of our drivers, like the Street Cleansing team can clock up more than 450 miles a week. This training should show our drivers that if they alter the way they drive then we can reduce our carbon emissions and save money. If the drivers take this knowledge when they drive their own vehicles it will help save them money but also help reduce their own carbon footprint.”
