Title: Sustainable Organic Gardening for Improved Food, Nutrition, Income Security and Environment Conservation
Community Sustainable Development Empowerment Programme (COSDEP) is a non-governmental grassroots organization located in Kihara Township in the county of Kiambu. The organization was founded out of the need to enlighten the local farmers on the need to be aware of the implications of today’s farming methods on the health of food producers and consumers, ecosystem and maintain yields by in particular addressing the soil situation which is an indispensable necessity in farming.
The program later due to farmers’ demand and interest spread its wings to the neighbouring areas and put the other districts of Central Kenya under its focus since they shared in the problem of diminishing returns from increasingly small and over cultivated pieces of land. Poor practices, overdependence on commercial inputs and chemicals exacerbated the situation, impacting heavily on the environment ad therefore caused nutritional insecurity and the resultant perpetual poverty. The lack of knowledge of a sustainable method of farming was identified as a major factor and as a result COSDEP intended to impart sustainable organic farming skills to the small holders in the area.
